The Representational Art League exhibit at Moonstone Crossing Winery has been planned since well before May of this year, giving league members enough time to visit wineries, paint "en plein air" and shoot reference photos. One such July visit was to the Winnett Winery in Willow Creek, home and vineyard of Sharon and Dave Winnett. Timed with the blooming of lavender and roses amid the vineyard, ripe pickings from overloaded cherry trees and a cool visit to the barrel room, the members had much inspiration to capture.

Once a year or so I visit lovely Mendocino, on the Northern California coast. This watercolor comes from a street there and shows the interesting eclectic architecture one finds in the town. And, yes, the Siamese cat was there, but I took artistic license and moved him to a different spot.

I just learned that this painting won 2nd place in a Daniel Smith art supplies watercolor contest. Very happy about that. It's currently on display at the Trinidad Art Gallery in California through the end of May 2011.

On day 4 of our Mexico trip, we went to an exclusive beach-side community. The lovely crescent-shaped beach was called Kissing Beach. After I painted this one I went for a swim and then had a lovely lunch of fresh seafood. A day in paradise!

In July 2011 I will have an exhibit of my tiles at the Fire Arts Center Gallery in Arcata. I am busy getting ready for it, trying to get a piece or two fired every week. Here is one that I just took from the kiln, of a red-wing blackbird. These are one of my favorite birds --- a true sign of spring. I am pleased with the bright colors I've achieved with high-firing (Cone 10, about 2300 degrees F.). My show will have cats, birds, flowers and landscapes.

This spring the Representational Art League held a portrait challenge---and what a challenge it was! We all did portraits of the same model, Kristin, who posed for us. For my portrait, which I did in watercolor from a photo in my studio, I placed her in a store setting (in this case, Moonrise Herbs, a local Arcata store). I took photos from the store and used a photo of Kristin when she searched in her red purse to find a lipstick. I called this painting "Where's my Credit Card?"

The end of the year, our Representational Art League will have an exhibit of wine-related art at the tasting room of Moonstone Crossing, a local winery in Trinidad. We are all busily working on art for this. Here is a start of a watercolor I am doing. This shows just the first layers. The scene is of grape pickers working during a cold October night, picking Pinot Noir grapes for a rose wine. I am working from a photo taken by Terry McCarthy at Navarro vineyards in Anderson Valley. The painting has progressed since this stage and has proven to be much fun to paint.

Fernbridge is turning 100 years old in 2011. Its cement structure has a tremendous history to its credit withstanding the many floods and being the important guardian to the Ferndale Valley. This 11" x 29" watercolor painting honors its longevity and a major transportation vehicle to the valley people.

I titled this painting "Local Treasures"...wine and cheese of Humboldt County! Did you know Humboldt County has about 23 wineries??? The cheese is the wonderful Cypress Grove "Humboldt Fog"...a semi-soft aged goat cheese of the cleanest, purest goats milk in the area...yielding goat cheese from heaven in my opinion! I'm ramping up to paint a handful of paintings that are all about wine. It'll be fun. 8" x 10" oil on linen panel.

"Humboldt Crabs at Arcata Ball Park" is an open edition print celebrating the long tradition of Crabs Baseball in Humboldt County. The team, founded in 1945 is the oldest continuously-operated collegiate baseball team in the country. 2011 marks the 67th consecutive year of Crabs baseball. The team is based in Arcata, California, approximately 250 miles north of San Francisco, and play their home games at the Arcata Ball Park.

This tile mural of a grape bunch is created using cuerda seca, a technique from 15th century Spain, and high-fired glazes. Sara focuses on achieving beautiful, vibrant colors in a Cone 10 kiln (about 2300 degrees Fahrenheit).

Sara's annual tile exhibit takes place in November at the Fire Arts Center Gallery on South G Street in Arcata, California. She's been busy rolling, cutting, slipping, bisqueing, painting, and glazing tiles for the show. The show opens on Friday, November 12, during Arts! Arcata from 6-9P.

"The first time I saw sheep dressed in colorful outfits at our local County Fair, I just had to smile. Apparently these stylish Lycra bodysuits are used to keep freshly shorn sheep warm and also to make sure they stay clean and white prior to showing. This watercolor is currently on display at the Humboldt County Fair in Northern California."

This round rock can be found near Green's Creek a tributary which feeds into Lake Shasta. It was a very interesting find and I couldn't resist photographing it for one of my drawings. While the rock is true to form, and the creek runs into the lake, I have enhanced the other areas of the drawing to make it more interesting.
